German telcom – fail

It has been noted that the amount of information flowing out from this site and our Twitter accounts has gone down substantially since we left Great Britain. That is because the German telecoms are in the dark ages when it comes to sims and that wireless is not nearly as common as one would suppose, even here in Berlin…

Sorry folks, we are doing what we can…

Today we hooked up with an expensive provider just to get maps and weather and make sure we have some email. Weird how you get used to being connected on a trip…

  1. Yeah, one would think… But the real it is that the two SIMM providers in Germany that will work with the iPad do not have the SIMMs available in the storefronts. I would have had to preorder it and had it delivered to a German address. The pricing seems off as well, one provider actually wants to charge me 25 dollars for the SIMM! That is on top of the data charge. As weell almost everey single outlet we tried we found ignorance about teh companies policies (as stated on their corporate website).

In Great Britian all I had to do was walk into a 3 store hand over ten pounds. Done.

Also wireless in Germany has been spotty. The hotel in Schwerin was not bad, if somewhat short range. In Schewrin itself, forget finding wireless. In Berlin wireless is avaialbe in some places, but it is often expensive and cares that offer free wireless often have to tell me that it is broken…
